Help save parental notification in Illinois!
Posted by Matt Yonke, March 10th, 2008
As I recently reported the Parental Notification of Abortion Act in Illinois has suffered a recent setback. Today, I have something you can do to help get this law enforced!
Over the objections of the State Supreme Court and Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Federal Judge David Coar has refused to lift his injunction on the law, claiming the Supreme Court's guidelines for judicial bypass aren't clear enough, and setting the stage for another decade of legal wrangling on this important law.
But there's still hope. The State's Attorneys of Illinois all have the authority to join this case and call for a Motion to Reconsider.
This would give Judge Coar the opportunity to reconsider his decision and, even if he decides to maintain the injunction, it would give the plaintiffs in the case solid ground from which to appeal the decision.
But we must act quickly, Judge Coar's decision must be appealed by Thursday!
So here's what you can do:
Call the state's attorney for your county today and ask him to intervene on the parental notification lawsuit.
Here are the numbers for the larger northern counties:
- Cook County: Richard Devine, 312-603-5526
- Dekalb County: Ron Matekaitis, 815-895-7164
- DuPage County: Joe Birkett, 630-407-8000
- Kane County: John Barsanti, 630-232-3500
- Kendall County: Eric Weis, 630-553-4157
- Lake County: Michael Waller, 847-377-3000
- McHenry County: Louis A. Bianchi, 815-334-4159
- Will County: James Glasgow, 815-727-8453
- Winnebago County: Philip Nicolosi, 815-319-4700
Remember, Judge Coar's decision must be appealed by Thursday. Please call your state's attorney right now to keep the Parental Notification of Abortion law from being a dead letter.
Attorneys from the Thomas More Society Pro-Life Law Center are eager to work with state's attorneys to save the Parental Notification of Abortion Act and finally protect our kids.
Joe:
Please fight to lift this injunction about parental notification!
Thank you, Nan Lightbody

I found this on you tube and had to post it. Proof that it's a baby and not a blob. And it's hilarious.

I am in Cook County and have been trying to reach the proper party to show my support. I called Richard Devine's office and they gave me the State's Attorney's #. They in turn, gave me the Attn. General's #. They were going to send me back to the State's Attny.'s office at a different #. No one seemed to be able to help and finally the State's Attorney's office took down my information. You may want to check into this since time is important. After Mr. Devine's #, I called 312/814-3000, 312/603-5440, 312/814-3580 and they took my info reluctantly.

Janet,
You did the right thing. They're giving everybody the runaround, which is a shame. It seems no one wants to take responsibility for this situation.
The point that your phone calls are getting across, together with everybody else who called, is that we are not going to let this bill slip away unnoticed. They are getting these phone calls and they are feeling the heat.
Thanks so much for calling, Janet, and thanks to everyone else who's called.
If you haven't called yet, there's still time! Find your State's Attorney's number and let him know you want him to act!
In Christ,
Matt Yonke

On a side note, Lisa Madigan gave birth to a baby daughter today.

Matt,
I wasn't sure if you wanted to do a quick followup on this. I checked today to find out what has happened since last week, and it appears that the Thomas More Society did file an appeal, but the only States Attorneys they appear to have been able to convince that this was worthwhile were down in Tazewell (near Peoria) and Effingham counties. Sad day for us when NONE of the SAs in the collar counties would even stand up for an appeal to a law that's been on the books since 1995. I may be reading more into the top page of the appeal, maybe others are also interested. But those were the only ones named.
You can read their brief here (it isn't too long) :
http://thomasmoresociety.org/IL_Parental_Notice/Parental_notice_Motion_to_intervene_3-13-08.pdf
I think their logic is good and if they can find a place to be heard, their argument makes sense. However, as you can see from Judge Coar's ruling, logic doesn't always win out.
I appreciate the very hard work you and the other volunteers have given in the fight against PP.
Thanks !

It's something when the Catholic leadership won't even back a bill stating life begins at conception. Is this the same Thomas Moore Law Center that's working on the IL notification issue?

Catholic leadership Sorry the link was bad above.

Just discovered this site. Are you from Lisa Madigan's Office? Congrats to her on the new addition on March 11 of this year.
I live in Lake County and have a question about the Crime Victim's Right Act.
By the way I did vote for her.
