The Chicago Tribune reports that Barack Obama has issued a statement in support of Planned Parenthood in Aurora:
I fully support Planned Parenthood's desire to open a new facility in Aurora. The proposed center will serve the growing population in a part of the state where access to a full range of reproductive health care services is lacking.
This is great news on so many levels. First, the organization I work for, the Pro-Life Action League, was the first to picket candidate Obama—back on February 10, one of the coldest days of the year. We opposed him then, he's opposing us now—kind of returning the favor.
Moreover, it's a sure sign of how effective we've been that a presidential candidate has turned his attention to this controversy. The nation is watching what's happening here at "Ground Zero" of the abortion wars.
Finally, I can't help but chuckle to think of Barack Obama climbing aboard Planned Parenthood's sinking ship here in Aurora. Obama has decided Planned Parenthood is innocent; he says:
I hope the investigation by city officials into the permit process can be concluded as quickly and fairly as possible, so that this important facility can begin its operations.
Obama has no notion that the conclusion of this investigation could be anything other than a green light for Planned Parenthood. Why is he so sure?
The Tribune also informs us that Obama has close ties to Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, whom he campaigned for in 2005. Did the Mayor's office assure Obama that this would be the result?
Who knows. It sure does look as if the Mayor has staked everything on Planned Parenthood's opening, and soon—and lots of people are saying that if Planned Parentood goes down, Mayor Weisner is going down with them.
But could a local issue like this—even one that has drawn so much national attention—really harm a national candidate like Obama? Apparently Obama thinks it could help him to speak out in support of Planned Parenthood; who knows but that it might not backfire as the whole truth about the Planned Parenthood scheme is exposed?
At this point, nothing would surprise me.
