Your "anti-choice rabble rouser" on the Special Use Permit question

Posted by Eric Scheidler on Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Rabble Rouser? The folks over at the new Planned Parenthood Aurora (PPA) blog have just dubbed me an "anti-choice rabble rouser." I'm sure they intended to slight me with that moniker, but it's really much more insulting to you, dear reader—one of the rabble!

Unlike we who have nothing to fear—because we are right—they won't publish comments from the opposition over there, so I will respond here to their claim that in my remarks to the City Council Tuesday I was "stooping to outright lies and misinformation."

My remarks were to the effect that Planned Parenthood, as a not-for-profit medical facility, required a "special use permit," and I stand by them. I also suggested that having needed that permit from day one, PP should be ordered to demolish their building, and I stand by that remark too.

It might be helpful here to recall the definition of the word "lie": "a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive." Now, I may be wrong about this "special use permit" business, but I don't think I am. So I wasn't lying about it.

No—a lie would be something more like this:

Gemini sign permit appTo fill out, say, a signage permit declaring that you didn't know who the tenant of your building would be, when you actually did know who your tenant was, but didn't want anyone to know. Or to say on the same form that you didn't know what your sign was going to say, when you actually did.

PP sign -- before and afterIs there anyone who really thinks Gemini/Planned Parenthood didn't know what the sign outside that building was going to say? There's been some obfuscation (Judge Norgle's word) about "which division" of Planned Parenthood would be moving in, but does anyone honestly believe there was ever any doubt this wasn't built specifically to say "Planned Parenthood"? Please.

I think everybody's figuring out who the liars are here in Aurora.

The unnamed author of the PPA blog goes on to call the special use permit issue revelation "outright misinformation specifically crafted to confuse and muddle the issue."

Now that, I think, might be a fair description of the City's claim in today's Beacon:

The center occupies land that was part of a 4,000-acre annexation in August 1973, the same one that brought the Westfield Fox Valley mall into Aurora. This area has its own zoning laws, through planned development district rules, and those laws don't require a special-use permit for medical centers, said Carie Anne Ergo, the city's public information officer.

As far as it goes, Ergo's right: a "medical office" does not require a special use permit. However, the problem isn't that PP is a medical facility, but that it's a not-for-profit medical facility, a use for which there is a separate category in the zoning codes. And our reading is that the land Gemini/PP built on requires a special use permit for that use.

Unless there's some very unusual document which the City has failed to cough up despite numerous FOIA requests over the past three months, PP can't legally do business at 3051 E. New York Street.

Why doesn't the City see this? Why do they refuse to enforce their own ordinances against Planned Parenthood (who continue to occupy this building without an occupancy permit), while going out of their way to construe other ordinances so as to abridge our First Amendment rights?

I don't know—but I hope the answer isn't as chilling as I fear it might be.

Update: Read Vince Tessitori's 9/28 memo, sent to the Mayor, Aldermen and Corporate Counsel for the compelling and well-documented legal argument that Planned Parenthood requires a special use permit to operate at 3051 E. New York Street.

Great article… sounds like our claims regarding the "not-for-profit" ARE still valid. With all of the other PP lies and deceit that are now in the open, the justification to shut them down is already overwhelming… and now we have even one more reason to shut down the clinic! Please keep pressing the fight on this front AND on all of the numerous lies that have been exposed.

    Eric,

Everything you have stated above makes perfect sense.
    It is logically coherent.

I believe the Aurora City Council is giving in to Planned Parenthood's threats of lawsuits. I believe the City Council is more interested in allowing PP to open in Aurora, rather than enforce its own laws, and rather than be governed by the people.

The City Council is playing politics with an evil organization which is always used to getting its own way and bullying individuals and corporate bodies around: Planned Parenthood.

We cannot let this happen. We will not let this happen.

Everyone, please pray, fast and be united with each other in this cause. Please, let us be united. Let our rallying cry be: For God, for country, for Aurora, for our families, for the innocent babies!

Actually it is quite amusing that the REAL anti-choicers, those who would deny women the right to be counseled by those offering alternative choices to abortion, would use that descriptive moniker. It really makes you wonder what the agenda of the abortion rights minority is.

Looking at the sign in the front (or at the side I should say) of the PP building, it seems to me that the PP logo and words seem to fit awfully nicely in the space. That's pretty good considering they had no idea what would be put there. :-)

Eric, great article! I'll pass it on to Tom. Paul, a very wise comment. Yes, we must pray, fast and be united through Christ. I was a little bummed out that the Rosary, because it is Catholic and not thought of as ecumenical, was not recited/led by Fr. Pavone or any of the other priests in attendance at the recent vigil. One priest did lead the Divine Mercy Chaplet after Fr.'s talk and prayers, but it seems like by not having the Rosary led by our leaders in lieu of upsetting the other faiths in attendance, it was a missed opportunity of "handing it to the devil." Here's a link to the promises of the Rosary. They are from Mary, our Virgin Mother. http://www.rosary-center.org/conprom.htm

I think if the city obtained documents for signage orders from PP (or Gemini), of WHEN the signs were ordered from whatever sign company they used, I'll bet that the tenants "were known" to Gemini, (However, we already know that!)and that the date was prior to the approved sign permit!

I would venture to believe the architect of the building also knew who he or she was building for. But that is just a guess.

I like the comment in the letter to the editor you link to:

"The stealth method has backfired because it has raised questions about whether Planned Parenthood can be trusted here and elsewhere."

I caught on to the fact that PP couldn't be trusted 24 years ago when my babysitter told me about how SHE had learned that they couldn't be trusted. When they "processed" her through an unwanted abortion at her mother's request, lied to her when she asked about "the baby" (telling her it was "a blood clot" at 8 weeks), and when they found out that the pregnancy was intentional and that this girl was too squeamish about touching herself to even use tampons they fit her with a diaphragm. Needless to say she was quickly pregnant again. How much could they really have been invested in preventing an abortion when they give a girl like that, who WANTS to have a baby, and fit her with a contraceptive divice they know will sit unused in the nightstand drawer?

Right now, though, it looks like all we need to do is hand them another shovel and tell them "Keep digging!"

And pray that people start to really wonder, "If they lie about who they even are, what else are they lying about?"

I disagree about having the building demolished. The building would make an excellent pre-natal clinic. Yes, there is a need for medical services for people who are low income in the area, however, PP is not the answer. I will continue praying that this clinic never opens as PP.

It is interesting amd somewhat amusing to see the moniker PP is using to describe you, the "rouser" and we the "rabble". The REAL anti-choicers are those who would deny women the necessary information to make an informed decision prior to having their babies killed. PP is happily training so called escorts who will deny women the last chance to make a choice not to have an abortion. By the way, in looking at all those young faces outside of city hall in Aurora the other night, it is obvious PP has indoctrinated some really young girls. If you the reader are one of those young girls the first thing you should do is click on the link at comment number 6 above. Also, ask yourself: what is it that drives the anger in those older PP women you see. Think for yourself, and do not let others blind you with FALSE choices.

  11. Eric Scheidler says:

Mary: The problem with this building is that it's so use-specific. It's an abortion factory, plain and simple. Possibly it could be put to use as a legitimate surgical center, but that's about it.

But even that would be a difficult fit. Those thick, high, tiny windows—not the kind of open, comforting atmosphere you want in a medical facility.

My take is this: The psychological impact of demolishing that building on both the pro-life and the pro-abortion sides cannot be overestimated. The end result of such a sight would be hundreds, even thousands of babies and mothers saved from abortion across the nation, thanks to increased pro-life activism.

So I say again, "Tear it down!"

  12. Alex Rechenmacher says:

The images of a bull-dozer pushing this place to the ground, with the prayer warriors and thousands of pro-life advocates cheering it on have gone through my mind as well. As a preliminary thought, demolition is quite the rallying image but it may also be a legal extremity. I've thought maybe it might be a good idea to propose to the city some "easy" solutions to this problem. In other words, someone's speech at the next council meeting might include…

The Top 10 Companies/Organizations/Uses for the To-Be-Abandoned Facility on Oakhurst:

Then we list ten ideas, like an indoor paintball facility, a free children's learning center, a research lab for a local university, or (gasp) a REAL women's health care facility. Of course, it would be an added bonus to make sure (and point out) that each of these would avoid the "special use" category.

Demolition is just a tall order for a municipality, that's all.

My question through all of this is, if this was zoned for a medical facility, does that also mean that a surgical center is the same thing. They have 7 surgical rooms and 13 recovery rooms. Wouldn't that need to have a special acreditation and other types of permits. I really don't know of any surgical centers that have that many surgical rooms. Does Planned Parenthood get special treatment in that area as well.
I have heard that an abortion takes only about 15 min. why so many surgical rooms, is this going to be assembly abortions. Just a few questions I had, that's all.

    Eric is right.

I say TEAR IT DOWN, TEAR IT DOWN, TEAR IT DOWN!

It is a horrible deathcamp building.
It was not built to preserve life.
    A children's learning center?
    Can you imagine childrens' questions:
"Mommy, what was this building built for?"
"It was built to kill little babies, dear!"

    I repeat: TEAR IT DOWN!

  17. Paul says:

Maureen, you raise a good question about accreditation or approvals for a surgical versus a medical facility. I would think the Illinois Department of Public Health would have requirements, standards, approvals for a surgical facility. If IL DOH requires approvals, did PP obtain these? (I doubt they would have.)

As for having 7 surgical rooms and 13 "recovery" rooms:
This IS a horrible ABORTION FACTORY. It has one purpose: the abominable destruction of tiny innocent babies and the ruining of women's lives.

If you are a priest reading this blog, please announce this intention at your Masses and please offer to go with parishioners to the vigil site to pray (yes the Rosary)and please bring Our Lord there in the Blessed Sacrament and an image of Our Lady. Perhaps two priests could go together to encourage one another and other priests as well. This is WAR and we have the weapons to fight it. If you are a layperson reading this, please reach out to 5 friends and ask them to join the prayer vigil. Once people see the magnitude of this killing factory they will understand and will return and take prayerful, peaceful, and legal action to stop Planned Parenthood. On another front, my husband and I are taking steps to remove our checking account out of Harris Bank because they sponsored the gay pride parade in Chicago. Not to confuse the issue but with PP you get all the evil. We need parents in Aurora to see the materials PP uses in their sex education. Our leaders need money to fight this. Please contribute and ask others to do the same.

  19. Michael says:

Regarding the knowledge of "what was going to be on the sign", they must have known, per the author above, that said their name fits perfectly into the space allotted.
If we knew the name of the company that did the sign, we could ask them for the date of the work order. If anyone knows, I'll pursue it.

Also, as far as the building goes, I say memoralize the 7 surgical rooms in some way(maybe for the seven sorrow of Mary) and use the rest of the facility to be a become a beacon of hope for those women who do need help before and after an abortion. It would be a perfect example of our cause, that we care for all people, versus the comments that PP folks make when they say we aren't doing enough to help out. Plus, we would should all the neighbors around the clinic that we are more than just people walking the sidewalk, we are people walking in the path of Christ.

  20. Paul says:

Sally, your recommendations for priests to come and bring the Blessed Sacrament is an inspired idea. Actually, one priest has done this already, and a story of that Visit is elsewhere on this blog.

Thanks for the info on Harris Bank, which had been my bank for over 13 years. I recently opened a new account at another bank for unrelated reasons, but now I have a reason to cancel my account with Harris. The problem is, many businesses support the Sodomists' so-called "parade" of heinous abominations and mortal sins. There is also a general boycott of Ford Motor Corp. for their continued support of the sodomists' agenda. (Promoted by the American Family Association.)

I also believe that we should start a concerted Rosary Crusade -led by Bishop Sartain and Bishop Doran – in other words, they should announce a ROSARY CRUSADE to keep PP out of Aurora and to end ALL abortion in their respective dioceses and urge all their priests and laity to pray the Rosary in large groups, in churches, at the Prayer Vigils, in families. Rosary Crusades have moved mountains in the past and are a most powerful means of defeating the power of the enemy.

Thanks Paul. I agree with the Rosary Crusade. Great idea! We need to build coalitions of different faith communities, age groups, ethnic groups etc. One correction on my comments. I misspoke. Harris Bank as far as I know did not sponsor the Gay Pride Parade but they did sponsor the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago along with lots of folks including Best Buy and AT&T and you can check it out at http://www.gaygameschicago.org.
Did anyone see the scathing piece about us in the Trib Sunday? You can tell how successful our protest is by how upset our opponents are in the blogs and press. We know who is truly upsetting them and that victory has already been won. Amen
